MB WEEKLY:
EXCLUSIVE READER QUESTIONS
TO MB CITY MANAGER BRUCE MOE

Dear City Manager: WHILE I AND ALL OF MY NEIGHBORS ARE INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL FOR THE ADDITIONAL HIRES TO THE MANHATTAN BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT, I’M ANXIOUS TO KNOW WHETHER YOUR FUTURE PLANNING INCLUDES ADDITIONAL HIRES IF CRIME CONTINUES TO INCREASE. IT DOES NOT SEEM LIKE THE CRIME PROBLEM WILL GO AWAY ANYTIME SOON, SO WHAT IS OUR PLAN SO WE DON’T GET CAUGHT SHORT AGAIN? —- G.O., MANHATTAN BEACH
A: The City Council, the Police Chief and I are all committed to public safety as priority one. The recent addition of more police officers will position us well to continue to proactively address and prevent issues before they arise as well as respond to crimes when they do occur. As the City has demonstrated over the years, we are able and willing to put resources where needed and rapidly adapt to a changing environment. If further additional officers are warranted I have no doubt that we will hire them.

Dear City Manager: WHO WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE DINNER WITH, ELON MUSK OR PRESIDENT BIDEN? —- MB WEEKLY EDITORS
A: Neither. I am too busy preparing for the next City Council meeting.

Dear City Manager: I UNDERSTAND THAT WE HAVE SEVERAL PUBLIC COMMISSIONS AND COMMITTEES DEALING WITH SEVERAL TOPICS, BUT THERE IS NO COMMISSION DEALING WITH PUBLIC SAFETY. WHY IS THAT? AND IS THAT SOMETHING YOU HOPE TO CHANGE? —- L.K., MANHATTAN BEACH
A: Establishing boards, commissions and task forces is a City Council policy decision. My role as City Manager is to implement the City Council’s directives if they were to create such a panel.

Dear City Manager: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CITY EVENT TO ATTEND? —- D.H., MANHATTAN BEACH
A: It is hard to pick just one, but if I had to it would be The Old Hometown Fair. There are so many great arts and crafts to enjoy, the weather is almost always perfect, and seeing so many community members enjoying themselves is the essence of the event.

More Crime – Two Restaurants In North Manhattan Beach Have Break-Ins

On March 24, 2023, between the hours 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., two burglaries of local restaurants in the 3400 and 3800 block of Highland Avenue occurred. The restaurants were burglarized by suspect(s) who broke glass doors to gain entry. Suspect(s) stole cash, payroll checks and tax documents from one business. There was no loss in the second business. The burglaries may be related to the burglaries that occurred in the City of El Segundo around the same time. The Manhattan Beach Police Department and the El Segundo Police Department are working together to investigate these crimes.

Fête Bistro By Slay Opens To Standing Room Only:

If his first night is any indication of what’s to come, chef David Slay has another huge winner on his hands with the opening of Fête Bistro by Slay in Manhattan Beach, a few doors away from his other two restaurants, Slay Italian Kitchen and Slay Steak and Fish. On his first evening, Friday, March 31, the place was packed with people waiting outside for a table.

Meet Gerry Morton

President of the MB Rotary Club

Q: WHAT DO YOU LIKE DAYDREAMING ABOUT?
A: I like daydreaming about the future of my company, my family, and journeys I would like to take in the future. I also spend time thinking about technology gadgets, chess openings, and the ideas generated by the 3-4 books that I’m reading at any given point in time.

Q: DO YOU FIND IT EASY TO ADMIT YOUR MISTAKES?
A: I find it fairly easy to admit my mistakes. I know that everyone makes mistakes and it’s important to learn from them. My intention is to just ensure that the mistakes I make are new ones each time.

Q: WHAT COLOR DOMINATES YOUR WARDROBE?
A: The color that dominates my wardrobe is blue. I like how calming and peaceful the color blue is. It reminds me of the water which I love and it also matches my eyes.

Q: ARE YOU A PROCRASTINATOR?
A: I am not a procrastinator, because I like to get things done as soon as possible. I enjoy my playtime far more when my mind is clear knowing that I’ve done the work.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER?
A: My favorite flower is the rose. It is beautiful and elegant.

Q: DO YOU EVER FANTASIZE ABOUT BEING FAMOUS?
A: I do not fantasize about being famous. I really don’t think fame is all that valuable. Naval Ravikant once said you want to be rich and anonymous, not poor and famous. I like that.

Q: DO YOU FIND IT EASY TO ASK FOR HELP?
A: I find it pretty easy to ask for help. I know that everyone needs help from time to time and I strive to be humble enough to reach out when I need it.

DO YOU LIKE TO GO OUT DANCING?
–Love it! Wish there were more places in the South Bay to go dancing.
DO YOU LIKE SPENDING TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY?
–Of course! Both of our kids live on the East Coast, so I can’t get enough of seeing them. I’m so proud of them!
ARE YOU CLOSE WITH YOUR SIBLINGS?
–Yes, although my brother and I weren’t very close when we were young, I cherish our relationship now. Who else can relate to the experiences of your childhood and laugh at the goofy antics. I also love reminiscing with him about our family members who are no longer with us.
DO YOU ENJOY TRYING NEW THINGS?
–Yes, unless they involve heights.
ARE YOU THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO GETS NERVOUS IN NEW SITUATIONS?
–I don’t think so. I enjoy meeting new people and traveling to new places.
DO YOU ENJOY GOING ON ROAD TRIPS?
–Yes, although I’m not crazy about the driving part. My back doesn’t like sitting in a car for hours. But exploring nature and new areas – especially little known towns – is a treat. When I was younger, my family drove across the country more than once; I’ll never forget the times we had together.
DO YOU HAVE ANY TATTOOS OR PIERCINGS?
–No thank you.
DO YOU LIKE SPICY FOOD?
–Yes, moderately spicy. Indian food and a variety of Asian foods are always a treat!
HAVE YOU SMOKED AT LEAST ONE CIGARETTE IN THE LAST YEAR?
–No thank you.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Steve Revel

The educational environment a modern American student is exposed to differs significantly from our childhoods. Our system feeds distractions and lies to pupils in public schools, which should sicken every American. If kids are taught to despise our nation and to doubt the fundamental laws of nature, how are they supposed to excel and guide us into the future? When creating the modern educational environment, the cult of variety has replaced individualism as the guiding principle. Biology, history, math, and religion are now subordinate to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Due to hypersensitivity impeding students’ capacities, the educational values of perseverance, independence, responsibility, and ambition have lost significance.

Even though the median priced homes have been declining this year as compared to 2022, homes in Manhattan Village have maintained higher price levels as compared to 2022 for the same Plan townhome. We consider ourselves very fortunate, but we are also aware the market is always changing. With interest rates down it remains a good time to buy if one can afford these prices. As long as new buyers in this market plan to keep their recent purchased home for several years, the cyclical market will eventually be a good market for them to sell if they chose to do so.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:

Of Hermosa Beach

Walking in Manhattan Beach is the worst-kept secret I know. Its rewards hide under every step. Perhaps because we take walking so much for granted, we often ignore its generous gifts. In truth, I doubt I would walk often or very far if its sole benefit was physical, despite the abundant proof of its value. There’s something else at play in walking that interests me more. And with the arrival of spring, attention must be paid.

1. ** I started my first job out of college 6 months ago. Over the past few weeks my sister has been in and out of the hospital. She was finally diagnosed with porphyria, which is an incredibly rare disease, that often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. My sister had to be moved to a different hospital to start getting treatment. My sister sent me a text saying, “I just got the flowers and cookies your coworkers sent to my hospital room.” I had no idea my colleagues were sending anything to my sister. —- Laurie D., Manhattan Beach

2. ** Scam! You received a ticket when the epidemic started, and you must pay $1,000 because we are following up with all the people who received fines at that time, according to a letter I recently received that says Superior Court on the outside. —- Suzy W., Manhattan Beach

3. ** After nearly 20 years, Amber’s Cove at Riviera Village in Redendo Beach is permanently closing its doors. The business was painstakingly cultivated by a mother and the daughter she named the store after. —- Tawny K., Redondo Beach

5. ** Mexico is a large country, and there are areas not safe and areas that are safe. I have been traveling to Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan for over 20 years and have never felt unsafe. I would not be traveling to a border town that our government has called extremely dangerous. —- Suzanne Rogers Karger

6. ** Have you been to the People’s Republic of Santa Monica lately? What a disaster! How did a once beautiful, small beach city become a filthy, homeless-overrun, crime-infested cesspool? —- Lindsay K., Manhattan Beach

7. ** Every week, Set the Table employs over 30 different, delicious, plant-powered ingredients for your meals and the creativity of their master chefs makes sure the only reason you need to repeat a dish is because you choose it. Let us care for you and your family —- Eat@setthetablela.com
