BOOK ‘EM! – SEVEN ARRESTED IN PASHA FINE JEWELRY ARMED ROBBERY:
On Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 5:53 p.m., the Manhattan Beach Police Department responded to Pasha Fine Jewelry (217 Manhattan Beach Blvd.) regarding a smash and grab robbery. Multiple suspects entered the jewelry store, used hammers to break display cases, and fled the store with miscellaneous merchandise. The suspects entered awaiting vehicles and fled the scene southbound in an alley. Multiple suspects were armed with what appeared to be handguns. No shots were fired. At approximately 7:23 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, Manhattan Beach Police Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle involved in the Pasha Fine Jewelry store robbery. The driver failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit ended in the City of Los Angeles and five adult suspects were arrested. Jewelry from the robbery was located within the vehicle. In a separate traffic stop occurring soon after the conclusion of the pursuit, two juvenile subjects were taken into custody. Jewelry and other items taken in the crime were located in this vehicle as well. In the early morning hours of March 23, 2023, the Manhattan Beach Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team (MBPD SWAT), with the assistance of the Gardena SWAT Team and our partners at the Los Angeles Police Department, served a search warrant in the City of Los Angeles.
MBPD Detectives are continuing to investigate at this time. Charges for the arrestees are pending. The persons arrested are:

Manhattan Beach Students To Attend American Legion Conferences:
This summer, a group of Manhattan Beach high school students will attend American Legion conferences. In June and July, Katherine Jester and the other four Mira Costa High School students, Alex Chun, Dash Clark, Charles Hiatt, and Dean Stasso, will represent their campuses in the American Legion Boys & Girls State conference and the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State conference, respectively. State, U.S. territory, foreign, and local posts make up the nonprofit Legion, which is comprised of American military veterans. Caryn Ramirez, college and career counselor at Mira Costa High School, who oversees the program on behalf of the high school, said in a press release this week that this year’s group of delegates “perfectly personifies all the characteristics this program is known for: dedication, integrity, and tenacity.” “We are thrilled to have them represent Mira Costa this summer, and this will be a terrific opportunity for them to develop important leadership qualities.”

Even though I am nauseated that there was yet another armed robbery in downtown Manhattan Beach, I must take a moment to congratulate the Manhattan Beach Police Department, under the direction of its chief, for catching all seven of these violent creatures. Sadly, no one in their right mind thinks these awful criminals will be in jail long, but it is up to us to fix that insanity. Also, credit the Manhattan Beach City Council for adding police to the force at this war-like time. Long overdue!

Q: WHAT MADE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY CHOOSE MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: The reason why Lido Bakery ended in Manhattan Beach is due to a casual conversation between Donald Foley and Mom circa December 2001 while mom met Don at the bar of Lido Di Manhattan Restaurant. Don was the owner of the restaurant and he was also well known in the business community back then. Lido was considered a landmark dining location at the time. Mom, on the other hand, had been working for Sweet Lady Jane, which was considered one of the best bakeries in L.A. back then. I don’t really know how exactly they were introduced, but I know for sure that Don was excited and innocently offered mom to start her own bakery and Manhattan Beach was the perfect town to do it. I also believe that mom naively accepted. And so I recall that Lido Bakery opened its doors around early July 2003.
Q: WHAT IS THE GUIDING PRINCIPLE TO YOUR BAKERY?
A: I consider that the two most important principles guiding our bakery are: always maintaining an honest connection to the integrity and quality of our ingredients and also believing that nothing replaces baking goods with patience and time, in other words, “Baking from scratch.”
Q: WHAT’S YOUR MOST POPULAR BAKERY ITEM?
A: We have so many items loved by our customers, but the biggest selling item has always been our Berries and Cream Cake.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: My favorite movie of all time is called “Cinema Paradisio.” I’m a sucker for simple life drama.
Q: WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT RUNNING A FAMILY-OWNED BAKERY?
A: The hardest thing about running a family-owned bakery is that it is family owned! Hahahaha. In my experience, sometimes one can lose those love connections with family members if work gets in the way. Let me put it this way; I regained a mother once mom retired and we no longer work day by day and year by year next to each other. I now remember how much I love her and how great she is.

Ten Years Of Laughter In Manhattan Beach Commemorated With Pancho’s Comedy Night:
With a variety of stand-up comedians every Monday night, Pancho’s restaurant in Manhattan Beach and host Danno Carter have been serving up the laughs for 10 years. And to commemorate the occasion, Carter and Pancho’s will host a special celebration. Carter, a native of Manhattan Beach, said, “I want to make it a lineup of largely comics who’ve helped us get this far, everyone’s favorites. Yet there might be one or two significant special guests included.” After a talk at Hennessey’s with buddy Dan Vos, a musician and bartender at Pancho’s at the time, the idea for the “Comedy Night” first emerged.
