MB Council Requests Begg Pool Replacement Proposals:

The neighborhood wants a new, bigger, and better Begg Pool, according to a survey. Recently, Manhattan Beach City Council ordered staff to request proposals for a new Begg Pool. TrueNorth Research’s October study, presented at Tuesday’s Council meeting, found 35.4% of locals “extremely interested” in a new aquatics center and 20.7% “somewhat interested.”

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Jefferson Graham

Writer-Photographer, “PhotowalksTV” host

Q: HOW DID YOU DISCOVER MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: Uncle Jed. I interviewed Buddy Ebsen about a “Beverly Hillbillies” TV special when I was at USA TODAY and we met in Redondo Beach. I drove here from Culver City down Vista del Mar and fell in love. Three months later we were living here.

Q: FAVORITE MB RESTAURANT?
A: Sweetgreens at Manhattan Village.

Q: BEST PHOTO SPOT?
A: I say every year I’ll never take another picture of the Pier again, but then I break my resolution. I can’t help it. It’s too gorgeous.

Q: THREE HIDDEN PHOTO SPOTS THAT PEOPLE DON’T APPLAUD ENOUGH?
A: The murals outside Baskin-Robbins, El Tarasco on Rosecrans and the sun painting on the Manhattan Avenue garage.

Q: IF YOU COULD LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
A: I wouldn’t leave Manhattan Beach, but if they ran me out of town, I’d pick Carmel by the Sea.

Q: WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLUG PHOTOWALKSTV?
A: Thanks for asking. New episodes of the travel series post every Saturday on YouTube. I’ve brought people on virtual photowalks and shown iPhone camera tricks all over the South Bay, France, New Mexico, Oregon and Spain. We’re going to Japan in March.

By MB Police Chief Rachel Johnson

“… this additional staff would allow us to meet some of our community requests for more engagement. I’d like to see more officers on bicycles. I would like to see more officers on foot … We need additional staffing to arrest career criminals and to conduct surveillance and other means to provide a shorter path from investigation to arrest. We are certainly able to do that now, but this would increase our bandwidth and our capacity to do that more efficiently. … The addition of a full-time bicycle patrol consisting of four officers would allow us to have the consistent, focused engagement of our community,” [MBPD Chief Rachel Johnson] told the Council. “ …This bicycle patrol will provide high visibility in residential and commercial areas while also patrolling areas that are difficult to patrol on vehicles, such as the bike path, high-density traffic locations, and small streets and alleys. They’d have essentially the same function as patrol officers – they’ll just be on bicycles. It allows them to slow down and see more things than you can take in in a car. It allows them to get off their bikes and walk a little bit here and there to see what things are going on in our community. So you will see more people in the field through our bicycle patrol.”

Founder & CEO of The Studio (MDR)

Q: WHAT IS THE STUDIO (MDR)?
A: The Studio (MDR) is a vibrant, boutique fitness studio. We are a class-based studio that practices the Lagree Method. We have 4 locations on the westside of L.A. and a brand-new studio in Manhattan Beach.

Q: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN ONE IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I live in Manhattan Beach plus I feel that the community is a perfect location for The Studio (MDR) because of its healthy, active community thirsty for a great workout with exceptional client service.

Q: WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS STUDIO?

Whether you are a busy professional keeping in shape, a mom squeezing in a workout between carpools, a finely tuned pro-athlete, a fitness fanatic, or a cancer survivor trying to find strength and confidence in recovery, our studios provide a warm, safe, and fun place to workout and be part of a great community. This moving meditation helps to improve overall health by pushing people past perceived limits to achieve their ultimate potential.

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:

71% SUPPORT COYOTE TRAPPING IN MANHATTAN BEACH

According to a random sampling of thousands and thousands of our readers, 71% of MB Weekly readers support a decision to begin trapping coyotes that are causing fear to residents of the city of late. “It’s a matter of common sense and safety,” said one long-time Manhattan Beach homeowner. “People and their pets are infinitely more valuable than wild animals that prey on both.”

Readers Respond To Dario Vullo:

On Verdict To Close Outdoor Dining In Our City

** I agree completely with Dario. I am in shock that MB would close down outdoor dining. Both myself and my friends still insist that we can only eat at restaurants if we can eat outdoors. I have a risk factor of asthma if I were to get COVID. I have worked very hard meeting with friends and family outdoors as much as possible and I have yet to get COVID because of these precautions. I am a psychologist, and I continue to see my clients frequently getting COVID and some continue to have very severe long-term COVID effects. Many cities I know are making outdoor dining a permanent part of the city, which is how it should be. I will not be going to any indoor dining restaurants in Manhattan Beach in the future. —- Dr. Melissa Robertson

** I am also very disappointed with the decision to stop the outdoor dining. Over the last two years or so, it has delighted me to see all the outdoor seating arrangements. People love sitting outside. It added something to our small town. We had a European vibe. And the major reason is that our local restaurants were able to survive, in some cases just barely. To take that away, we lose some of the charm of downtown Manhattan Beach. —- Dominique “Nikki” Ridley, Manhattan Beach

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia

Truth be told, Manhattan Beach is geographically connected to the once-great city of Los Angeles. Tragically, however, over the past few years, Los Angeles has descended into an atmosphere of violence, chaos, and severe decline. The main reason is that progressives think that influencing law enforcement agendas can and should be done to fulfill social justice concerns. The urge to redress unfavorable outcomes in economics, politics, education, race, sex, and even healthcare drives social justice zealots. However, it is simpler to prevent crime, maintain public order, and defend law-abiding citizens than they realize. They naively fail to appreciate the objective of criminal law – to prevent crime and protect innocent people.

17. ** OMG I love the “stop and stare” at 6th and Valley. If I’m not mistaken, I think this was put there (finally) because of the guy on next door who lives adjacent to the corner and has been posting videos of people brazenly running this stop sign ALL THE TIME, even with the publicity on Nextdoor and other venues. I can’t wait to see how people desensitize to this huge sign and simply keep blowing through the stop sign (hope the guy posts follow-up videos). We’ll see. I do hope it works though! People. It’s just a thin yellow line that keeps society survivable. We assume people will not cross over that line and hit us head on. Somehow this has been lost with stop signs … someone’s gonna die. —- Susan Boettner, Manhattan Beach
