MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:

73% Say Earbuds Not More Damaging to Hearing

The idea that earbuds are more damaging to hearing than other headphone types is just false according to 73% of a sample of MB Weekly readers. The poll results were confirmed by Cory Portnuff, an audiologist at the University of Colorado Hospital. “The misconception stems from the thought that, because an earbud sits farther into your ear, it would do more damage than something that sits farther away.”

EXCLUSIVE COMMENTARY
MAYOR STEVE NAPOLITANO:

Discussing Public Safety

The Council took actions to strengthen public safety in alignment with recommendations from our Fire Chief, Michael Lang, and our new Police Chief, Rachel Johnson, whose swearing-in ceremony took place in August. These actions include increasing foot and bike patrols throughout the business districts; increasing daily patrols throughout the city; over-hiring in the police and fire departments by up to five police officers and up to three additional firefighter/paramedics; and hiring three additional full-time fire employees. With our number one priority being public safety, Council approved these measures to maintain our local fire department and enhance services that effect our safety and our quality of life.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Ed Lynch

Founder & Executive Director of Mychal’s Learning Place

Q: WHAT ANIMATED YOU TO GET INVOLVED IN YOUR CHARITY?
A: My daughter Mychal is the inspiration behind starting Mychal’s Learning Place. When she was here there weren’t any programs that provided the programs and care we were looking for. What started as an after school program over 20 years ago has become so much more. Adult programs, a couple social enterprises with more on the horizon.

Q: HOW HELPFUL HAVE THE PEOPLE OF MANHATTAN BEACH BEEN IN SUPPORTING YOU?
A: The Manhattan Beach community is a big part of Mychal’s Learning Place. We have board members who live and work in MB. Many of our donors come from Manhattan Beach. We’ve been included in many community events that help to spread the word on the work we do but more importantly how very special the individuals we work with are. How capable and able. Pre-COVID, we had partnerships that supported our participants with important job skills training. We are currently looking to establish those again. The MB community has wrapped their arms around Mychal’s and we are so appreciative.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: That’s a tough question, let’s just say anything Quentin Tarantino.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: Libra

Q: WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT YOU’VE HAD IN RUNNING YOUR CHARITY?
A: It has been an honor to do the work that we do here. Don’t get me wrong, there have been challenges over the years and I would say the biggest is the necessity of funds to do the work we do. This will always be a challenge for nonprofits and that is overcome by the support of the community. We’ve been very fortunate over the years to make it through the tough times and continue to grow the organization. Complacency is not an option here at Mychal’s. There is so much more that needs to be done.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia

Progressives with extreme ideologies have no business running law enforcement organizations. Simply stated, it is not their calling. Their worldview forces them to protect offenders from responsibility, which in reality entails incarceration. When criminals are free, they do what they do, which is commit crimes. This straightforward calculation explains why crime increases under progressive rule. Additionally, cops are forced to disengage by public resentment. Since humans respond based on incentives, so do police officers. Cops will take extra precautions by confronting and restraining fewer criminals as long as a strong anti-law enforcement sentiment is in place. Progressive criminal justice practices and the mystical assumptions that underpin them only lead to turmoil, much like the smash-and-grab incident that occurred less than six months ago in our lovely city in broad daylight.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW:

By Darby Winston

Mercado

In the mood for authentic Mexican food, I was referred to Mercado by a coworker. Nestled in the heart of the Manhattan Village Mall, the restaurant was not only easy to find but was decorated in such a cool style… think graffiti skulls, skeleton banditos, and Dia de los Muertos imagery adorning the walls. Immediately, I was greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable team member named Carla. Without a moment to spare, I ordered and dived into a plate filled with incredible guacamole that was served with an assortment of fresh vegetables for dipping. What a great and healthy twist on a classic. From there, I devoured crunchy JÍCAMA SHRIMP TACOS that were garnished with chile de árbol aioli, Mexican slaw, pickled red onions, and micro-cilantro. Incredible! As if that wasn’t delicious enough, my night ended on the sweetest note with what arguably could be the BEST flan on the planet!

TWO MEN ARRESTED IN STRING OF MANHATTAN BEACH BURGLARIES:

A two-person burglary crew suspected in a pair of home burglaries in Palos Verdes and Manhattan Beach were arrested earlier this week, police said. On Monday, January 2, the two men committed a burglary at a residence in the 1300 block of Palos Verdes Drive West, according to the Palos Verdes Estates Police Captain Steve Barber. When officers attempted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle near the home, a pursuit ensued and the suspects were arrested soon after. Stolen property related to the burglary was recovered during the arrest. The two men were staying at a short-term rental house in Harbor Gateway, Barber said. On Wednesday, police served a search warrant at the residence and recovered additional stolen property linked to a separate burglary in Manhattan Beach a few days prior.
